If You Want People Talking About Your Business –
Get Out There And Speak!
You’ve done the networking mixers and the business builder groups...but have you gone out to meet with the general public and answer their questions directly?
Yes, I’m referring to that dreaded topic: public speaking. The Number One fear of most Americans, after death. However, it’s also one of the best-known ways of getting your business into the public eye.
Why would you do this – aside, of course, from promoting your business? Because you have key information that the public needs. If you’ve ever answered a raft of questions from a confused customer (or prospect) – you probably have material for a public presentation.
No, they don’t want to know the technical details of the latest whizbang gadget – or even how to use it. They want to know how to deal with the problems that you’re in the business of solving – oh, and if the gadget helps, that’s a bonus to your sales.
For example, if you’re a plumber in a community of vintage houses, you might want to speak about conserving water in old-style bathrooms, or preventing the problems caused by cast-iron plumbing. If you’re an electrician in the same neighborhood, you might want to host a talk about the dangers of pre-1950s knob-and-tube wiring.
What’s the purpose? Simple – you’re establishing yourself as an authority on the topic. Do-it-yourselfers will flock to talks like these, and will see you as a resource to use if they run into trouble. Even better, you’re informing less-skilled DIYers about the genuine risks they can face in their renovations, and giving them an alternative – you! Best of all,
